Good Sunday Morning all! We have arrived at the Holy City of Jerusalem. Our accommodations at the Grand Hotel are quite nice, and we are all filled with new vigor for the magnificence of our faithful discoveries.
The first pictures you see are of the actual rock beneath Christ’s tomb at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This place is actually a cluster of several buildings, the oldest of which was built by St. Helen, the mother of Constantine the Great, in 335AD, on the very spot where it is believed Christ was crucified and buried. The lower photos are of some of the interior iconography of the Church.

We were privileged to witness a midnight liturgy with a bishop from the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. We all received holy communion at this inspiring place in the wee hours of the morning.
Also inside is a small chapel dedicated to St. Loginus, the centurion who witnessed Christ’s divinity in Matthew 27:54
When one sees such things it is hard to deny. Please come to see for yourselves someday soon.

The name of Jericho quite possibly means “place of fragrance”, and the area surrounding this ancient city is prized for its verdant nature. While in Jericho, we tour a church at the site of the sycamore tree which St. Zachaeus climbed in order to see Jesus (Luke 19:1-10). A portion of this ancient tree is seen behind glass in the courtyard of this tiny church. We sampled sycamore nuts and dried fruits and enjoyed a lunch of local dishes al fresco. This is the site of the epic battle of Jericho where the wall came tumbling down with the power of God manifest in Joshua’s hands. Joshua 6:12-21

We continued to the Mount of Temptation, where Christ was tempted by Satan three times. Matthew 4:1-11 We were given the opportunity to climb or take a cable car to the top of the Mount in order to visit a Greek Orthodox monastery there, but with so much left to see on our itinerary that day we chose to stay closer to sea level!
Kathy S. was also tempted at this site. She succumbed to the temptation to ride a camel! What an experience!
She succumbed to the once in a lifetime chance to ride a camel!

  • Day three

We have left the Hotel Golan which was our home base in Tiberias and are traveling south to the actual site of Christ’s baptism by St. John. We will continue on to Jericho and Jerusalem this afternoon.

We all received a special blessing from Father Nick as we stood at the very spot where St. John the Baptist baptized Jesus. (See Matthew 3:3-17)This site is different from Nayarit (the site visited by most Christian pilgrims as shown in yesterday’s post), as it lies alongside the border of Israel and Jordan. As I stand at this site I think fondly of my own godparents.

  • Day two ends…

Our final stop this Friday was at the tourist side of the River Jordan where many believers get baptized in the faith. Tomorrow we will go to the actual spot of our Lord Jesus Christ’s baptism by John. Please pray for a sunny day for us! Although we enjoyed two rainbows with the misty weather today!

  • More day two…

    20120202-160324.jpg

Those who don’t believe in miracles, need only to visit a city like Nazareth. So instrumental to the beginnings of Christianity, and yet such an example of the courage that it takes to be a Christian in this part of the world. May God’s grace continue to strengthen these soldiers of our Lord!
The upper pictures are of the Orthodox Church of St. Gabriel which stands at the site of the Annunciation; the announcement to Mary by the angel Gabriel that she was to give birth to the Messiah. A still functioning well called Mary’s Spring is adjacent to the church courtyard. You can see it in the first pictures.

The pictures at the bottom are from the Greek Orthodox church of St. George at the site of the first miracle of Christ’s ministry; turning water into wine at a marriage feast in Cana. Christ was a reluctant miracle worker here according to John 2:4, but this became the first of many to come. The large stone vessel shown in these pictures is one of two at this site believed to possibly be the actual vessels used to contain the transformed wine.

  • Day two begins

    20120202-153036.jpg

Despite a cold and rainy beginning to our day, our spirits were lifted by the heights of Mt.Tabor, the site of our Lord’s transfiguration from the human to the divine, the prophecy fulfilled, the Word made flesh amongst the prophets Elijah and Moses!

The Site of the transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ is witnessed by two modern monasteries, one catholic and one Greek Orthodox, renovations are constantly being attended to by monks and nuns. Jesus is revealed in His glory atop this beautiful mountain (Mark 9:2-8)

  • Day one part three…

We are visiting the Mount of the Beatitudes and I for one, am beginning to understand the power of Christ’s messages to us. He is King and Savior, but also counselor and friend…we are among the many pilgrims from all parts of this world who are coming here today to stand in this holy place…it is humbling knowing how perfectly Jesus understood the human condition when we read Matthew 5:3-12

The Mount of Beatitudes is so named for the nine blessings or”beatitudes” with which this famous sermon begins. See Matthew 5:1-12 in order to understand why this destination is so revered by so many pilgrims.

  • Day one…part two…

Christ fed the multitudes with five loaves and two fish… Our souls were fed today when we visited Tabgha, the site of this miracle, and Capernaum, where Simon-Peter lived as well as Christ for perhaps three years of His time on earth. We then enjoyed a fish lunch in Tiberias to feed our bodies.

20120112-181957.jpgthe first few pictures are of Tabgha, the site of the Church of the Multiplication of the loaves and fish. Although we have been taught that Christ fed 5000 that day, the actual number is probably closer to 15,000 when women and children are included. The lower pictures are of the area of Capernaum where Peter had a home that Christ visited many times. The Catholic church of the Primacy of St. Peter there commemorates Peter’s return to favor in Christ’s eyes after his denial ( John 21:1-17).

  • Our first day

Although there is no record in the Gospels of Jesus visiting Tiberias, we know that He must have passed through it due to it’s proximity to Capernaum and the fact that it is the oldest continually inhabited city in the Galilee area, being in existence since the time Herod Antipas built it about 2000 years ago.20120112-175544.jpg

    20120112-175648.jpg

20120112-175711.jpgOur first day began with a light breakfast and bus ride to the Sea of Galilee. The pictures here are of the replica wooden “Jesus boat” on which we crossed the water just as Jesus and his disciples did 2000 years ago. Our faithful tour leader, Mr. Nick Vlahos looks across the sea at another boat passing nearby. The crew of the boat was well prepared with the raising of the American flag and our national anthem, as well as some recordings of Greek folk music to raise our national pride.
