  • Go with the Flo? Part 6….time for Aunt Flo to get outta here!

Hurricane Florence has been spreading her wrath in downtown Wilmington since about midnight. The wind and rain continues here with no let up this morning…

Praying all our friends in the area are safe and our home in the Tides survived without damage.

  • Go with the Flo? Part 5

We’re in downtown Wilmington, NC away from the coast… the rain and wind have started. Florence is just starting to pick up steam here…

  • Go with the Flo? Part4

    Waiting….it’s almost the worst part….

    Even the dog is bored…

Winds close to 20 mph here, about 25mph near our house on the water. We are in a holding pattern…

  • Go with the Flo? Part 3

We’re all stocked up and watching the weather channel at our home away from home for the next few days.

Plenty of water, wine, canned goods, dry goods and beer.

    Dog food for the pups…

Lots of candles and flashlights, batteries, marine radio, life vests and charcoal for the bbq.

Also starting to cook things (like hard boiled eggs) that can survive several (5-7) days without refrigeration…

    Almost forgot….got the games, too

  • Go with the Flo? Part 2

We are all shuttered up and packing to leave to go inland.

. . .The tide is unusually high today despite it not being a full moon tide.

Predictions are changing on the minute…Florence is now thought to be heading a little further south and hanging around coastline longer…

    Keep us in your prayers!

  • Hobak Korean BBQ will leave you full of happy!

Off-strip Vegas gem Hobak Korean BBQ is a family favorite because we miss having access to Korean bbq in Wilmington, NC. Our years in SoCal and Virginia were filled with adventuresome Asian shopping and dining out. Sadly, the only BBQ in the south is Carolina BBQ, which is great, don’t get me wrong, but it’s nothing like Korean BBQ! Korean BBQ is a communal eating experience right at your table, washed down with Soju or Hite Beer or..at least at Hobak… a beer and soju tower right at your table that is a ready-to-pour tap of goodness! The meats at Hobak are top quality Angus beef and pork sliced thin to cook quickly on the tableside grills while you and your companions enjoy the accompaniments of kimchee, daikon, pickled greens, steamed eggs, potato pancake and other house made goodies. There are marinated meats and pork belly and jowl to choose from as well. Let your server do the cooking while you enjoy your group and just TRY to finish all the food in front of you! The large family size combos will set you back about $95…but they will feed 6 comfortably. Dessert comes with the meal in the form of cute little ice cream sandwiches in a variety of flavors. This is another Vegas gem that’s great for a group! Don’t be shy…Hobak!

  • Burgers and fries “Vegas style”

Took a break from typical Vegas and visited off-strip gem Bacci Burgers for their innovative Asian themed burgers. From the ice-cold Nigori sake…

To the oxtail chili cheese fries…spicy goodness….

…the most excellent Bahn mi Burger…

Medium rare Angus burger with pork pate, fried egg and pickled carrot slaw.served with more house pickled veggies. And gilding the lily with truffle fries…

Our amusing, former musician host completed the experience with his wit and abilities. So many off the strip gems here! Stay tuned for Hobak Korean Bbq in my next post!

  • Rolled and Tanked

The food at the new Castle Street restaurant Rolled and Baked cannot overcome the following flaws: slow/delayed opening, slow service, erratic hours, small portions with big price tags, no carry-out service, and most annoying… owners and service people who lack experience in the industry. I had high hopes for this cutie…but alas….

  • Long lost memory…FOUND!

    Long lost memory…FOUND!

For anyone who has traveled in the Mediterranean, particularly Italy and Greece, and has been searching for a melon to rival the honey-sweet taste of the beauties over there….I have made a discovery! Although I cannot replicate the experience of a hillside villa in Tuscany in late afternoon with a glass of Pinot Grigio and some perfectly aged Parmesano Reggiano and prosciutto, this Sugar Kiss melon will take you back.

Found at my local Walmart of all places, these mini gems are only slightly larger than a softball and have the appearance of an average cantelope. I personally could eat the whole thing… it is THAT good!

Now I’ll just keep repeating to myself….you are in Santorini, sipping Vin Santo and enjoying a slice of kefalotiri and melon on your balcony overlooking the Aegean Sea…..
