  • Barcelona in two days

After our long flights overseas, our first stop is Barcelona, Spain. Arriving in early morning, we are trying to stay awake all day so we can reset our circadian rhythms more easily. After finding our wonderfully located hotel, we set off walking to find the nearby Arc de Triomf. Yes, Barcelona has one too! It is much more ornate in architecture than the one in Paris. And the beautiful promenade and park approaching it are spectacular on a sunny day!

Built in 1888 for the Universal Exhibition, it’s friezes depict the competitions occurring during those days. The shields of all of the provinces of Spain flank its arch.

After checking into the hotel, we embark on our prebooked tour of the city highlights. Of course, no tour of Barcelona is complete without a visit to the Gaudi masterpiece, the still unfinished, Sagrada Familia. We are dwarfed by the building and the genius of it’s architect.

    Front facade.
    Interior

And now the rear facade. So different from the front. So many vignettes to see.

    Just breathtaking!

Our tour also took us to the Gothic Quarter, Las Ramblas, and El Mercato de la Boqueria, Casa Batillo and other places. We also stopped to enjoy the best churros and hot chocolate I have ever eaten!

Our day ended with a quick dinner at a local eatery in l’exaimples (our hotel neighborhood)

    Buenissimo!

  • The reason I travel

    The reason I travel

Recently cruised through Mediterranean Europe with my hubby. Two weeks abroad, starting in Barcelona, Spain ending in Trieste/Venice, Italy. We saw many, many beautiful sights and dined on wonderfully fresh local ingredients. But, dear reader, THIS is WHY I love to travel….

    Meeting up with family!
    My new Sicilian friend!
    Captain Vasilis of Corfu!

This glorious world we live in is home to so many people who, like us, just want to share the beauty of their countries and culture to anyone and everyone willing to listen. When you travel you must look….see…taste…and most of all….listen!

  • Go with the Flo? Lessons I have learned from surviving a hurricane….

It’s almost a year later…the storm has a new name…but I thought this post bore revisiting. Although I am not physically with my friends and family in Wilmington, NC this time, I definitely am there in spirit… Here’s hoping the Meteorologists are all wrong AGAIN and Wilmington is spared Dorian’s wrath like most of Florida was!!

    1.PEOPLE not possessions.

    2. If you live on the coast, buy a generator.

    3. Flashlights (and batteries) for EVERY room in your house.

    4. Keep a supply of non-perishable food items in your pantry AT ALL TIMES.

    5. Be patient, kind and helpful when you can.

    6. Never underestimate the power of nature.

    7. Water (and wine) will keep you from going insane.

    8. Hard boiled eggs last for almost a week unrefrigerated.

    9. In a pinch, evaporated milk makes scrambled eggs unbelievably creamy.

    10. Having a grill with charcoal is a necessity.

    11. Believe in the kindness and strength of the human race. We are capable of so much more than we know!

    12. THE SUN WILL COME OUT TOMORROW!

  • Renewing at the Metropolis of Atlanta Diakonia Retreat Center

Renewing at the Metropolis of Atlanta Diakonia Retreat Center

Spent a wonderful weekend with some lovely ladies at the Metropolis of Atlanta Retreat Center in Salem, South Carolina. Two and a half days of making new friends while strengthening our love for Jesus.

The Diakonia Center is rustic but comfortable with a working farm, vineyard, and plenty of animal friends.

We as well as our Philoptochos sisters, attended many services with His Eminence Metropolitan Alexis at both the chapel on the lower level of the church…

and the beautiful, soon to be completed church…

Look at what God has blessed this Metropolis with!

The main hall has a fully functioning kitchen where excellent Lenten meals were prepared by the hardworking staff.

The highlight of the weekend was a wonderful session on Renewal led by the Rev. Dr. Nicholas Louh of St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church in Jacksonville, Fl.

Father Nicholas shared his ideas on how to keep ourselves healthy in order to be the best spouses, mothers, friends and children of God.

Reflect often on your own thinking…Do you focus on goodness/GOD?

Exercise spiritually…Be still with GOD for 15 minutes each day.

Non-negotiable self care…Honor the Sabbath/make time for what is important.

Environment…get rid of the unhealthy relationships and feed your soul.

Win over people…use your Time, Talents, Treasures and Touch!

    Such a powerful message…Share it!

Finally, remember that you are made in God’s image and He loves you unconditionally. Call on Him whenever you need Anything!

  • Cancun, te amo

37 years of visits hasn’t changed my love for this place or its people..

The beach is wonderful day or night.

With an endless supply of activities and places to visit including one of the newest near beautiful Xcaret…a floating gondola tour at night!

    Mexico is wonderful!

  • Savannah…easy

Did a quick birthday weekend getaway to Savannah, GA with my baby girl. Wonderful southern city with tons of history. Just visiting all the squares of the Historic District could keep you busy for a few days, but this was a whirlwind weekend…so we did the best we could! The majestic live oaks with their Spanish Moss filled branches line the streets of Savannah.

The monuments adorning the historic squares, Oglethorpe, Forsyth,Chatham,Monterey,Madison,Telfair, Pulaski tell the story of Savannahs’ antebellum past…

Even city hall is special here.

We dined at a restored southern mansion called The Olde Pink House..

We had a fantastic brunch at 700 Drayton at the Mansion across from Forsythe Park.

And for giggles we stopped by Paula Deens the Lady and Sons Restaurant and the diner, Debi’s, where Jenny worked in the movie Forrest Gump.

A great spa pedicure at Sweet Water Spa and some fun shopping at the City Market rounded out our stay! Can’t wait to return!

  • More storm cleanup with IOCC

Cleaning out a flooded home in Rocky Point today with IOCC and other volunteers. Imagine your whole life destroyed and laid waste out to the curb. So sad….

Children’s toys, clothing, and shoes amongst the rubble….

This home took on several feet of water. Mold was growing everywhere…all the way to the ceilings. All floors ruined…

Again, Jason and I are counting every blessing. Thank you Jesus!

  • Disaster Relief in Wilmington

Spent our day doing demolition on a home in Wilmington with water damage from Hurricane Florence.

We were so blessed to be spared during the storms and wanted to help out those less fortunate.

The home we visited today took on several inches of water and required demolition to remove damaged walls and floors. Several groups worked together today to get the home ready for rebuilding…volunteers all.

    Counting our blessings today!

  • Go with the Flo? Part 7

Came back to our home near ICW today to make sure everything was ok. Our house (and trees) have so far survived. Still VERY windy. Lots of families not so lucky.

Clean up is going to take some time!

  • Go with the Flo? She’s just a bitch…

Hello everyone…I cannot get any photos to upload because my cell service is so weak here. We are using cars to charge phones. We are cooking on our charcoal grill when weather permits…which hasn’t been often. It is day 4 and the rain has just now stopped. The wind is finally down to about 20mph this morning. As if to add insult to injury, a couple tornados passed nearby last night. The wind and rain were horrendous!! Our front entrance flooded.

We are all fine. Just sticky, tired and anxious. We have a Red Cross emergency radio that we are getting info on …that was the best Christmas present I ever bought! Love to all my readers, followers, friends and family. We are strong, we are family!
