The city of Madaba is known as a source of the beautiful ancient art form of mosaics. We visited a shop where these unique pieces are made. It is quite fascinating and time intensive! Next, we drove to the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in Madaba to see some of the beautiful mosaic iconography as well as a sixth century A.D. mosaic map of the Holyland which was uncovered on this site.

The pictures below are of an icon that was changed by a miracle in the church….look carefully and see if you can figure out what is unusual in these pictures of the Panayia and our Lord Jesus. The story is that this appeared one day out of the blue. What do you think?

Today we are on the road to Jordan. After crossing the border we drive up to Mt. Nebo, about ten miles east of the northern tip of the Dead Sea. This is the spot where God showed Moses the promised land of Canaan, but also told him that he would not live to take possession of the land (Numbers 20:6-12). We know that Moses lived out his 120 years of life somewhere on this 2700 ft. tall mountain. Franciscan monks have guarded the area for many years and have erected a church and monastery on this site which has been host to Christian churches since 394AD, according to excavations. Many ancient Christian mosaics have been found at this site and have been preserved for future generations. Those pictures are below. Currently, a new church and museum are being erected to house these treasures.

  • Our day five special treat

As a special treat for our group, our travel company arranged for us to meet the Patriarch of Jerusalem. We enjoyed some treats and his special blessings. The patriarchate had some beautiful icons and paintings which will follow along with our photo with His Beatitude.

  • More of day five

The culmination of the passion of Christ is revealed in these next few sites. We return to the church of the Resurrection, or the church of the Holy Sepulchre. This is the fruition of the prophecy, the reason for our belief, the essence of Christianity.

Now we begin to travel along the Via Dolorosa, or more commonly referred to as the stations of the cross, the passion of the Christ. The pictures you see above are from the Church of Flagellation. John 19:1-16 The ring of thorns worn on Christ’s head during His imprisonment and “trial” make a stunning impression on the pilgrims who visit this beautiful church. I hope that these pictures do it justice. I believe the iconography in these churches tell this well known story best. He suffered greatly for our sins!

  • Day five part 2

    20120116-201613.jpg

    20120116-201602.jpg

As we continue in Jerusalem we come to a place called the pools of Bethesda where there were many natural springs that were used for the Jewish cleansing rituals. Excavations have shown that the area actually contained two large 45ft deep pools that encompassed an area larger than a football field. The pools were constantly visited by the infirm because of a pagan belief in the healing powers of the waters. In John 5:1-9 a miracle was performed on a paralytic man who had no one to carry him to the waters; proving that it was not the waters that healed, but the Holy Spirit through Jesus. Several churches were erected on this site and destroyed throughout the years. What is left appears to be ruins, but there is still a powerful feeling of the strength of the Spirit here.

We next visit the birthplace of the Virgin Mary, where there is both an Orthodox church and a Roman Catholic church. St. Anne’s is reputed to be built over the home of Joachim and Anna, the parents of Mary. Blessed is she amongst women.

We began the day at the Western Wall, or the wailing wall…a very sacred place for the Jewish people. It is also the site of Mt. Moriah or the Temple Mount. We each got a chance to touch the wall…there is such a feeling of gravity here for me. The side that women can touch is quite a bit smaller than the men’s side so I have included my husbands photos to show that many synagogue groups come there to celebrate the Jewish rite of Bar Mitzvah, etc. That is to say that the wall is not just for wailing anymore.

We sometimes forget that Jerusalem is a holy city for three religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. We enter the Morroccan gate and see the mosque built on the site of the rock that carried Mohammed to heaven. We are standing in the place where Christ taught in the Temple and we are at the site of the holy of holies for the Jews. It is amazing!

  • Day four

We began our day a little later due to the late night, but quickly felt the excitement of being in this holiest of cities. We are just outside the gates of the city. In the distance you can see Mt. Zion.

The next few pictures are of the East Wall, the garden of Gethsemane , and the Basilica of Agony next to the garden. The large rock in the church is the very rock that Christ fell upon when He learned His destiny from His Father( Matthew 26:36-42). It is quite a contradiction to look upon the beautiful ancient olive trees in this garden and to picture the magnificence of this place at the time of Christ, and to imagine His heartbreak as He fell upon the rock when He finally understood and accepted His destiny. br />
